Testimonials

…from Students and School Stakeholders

HEALTH POLICY

“At the start of the year, there’d be 100’s of plates left behind. Now they’re starting to ask for seconds.” — DC School Administrator

CHILD

“Junk food, that’s the stuff we don’t like,
DON’T LIKE!
Healthy food, that stuff is alright,
ALRIGHT!
My school food is good stuff served tight,
SERVED TIGHT” — Rap by DC students

SCHOOL

“KiPOW! not only fills the void in health education at the school, but also supplements what is being served in the cafeteria. ” — OC School Administrator

CHILD

“I learned that exercising and eating healthy are both necessary to be healthy” — OC Student

CHILD-FAMILY INTERACTION

“Welcome to Team KiPOW! This week we learned about MyPlate and Energy ” — Week 1 Newsletter

CHILD

“KiPOW is awesome and super fun!” — DC Student

COMMUNITY

“We’re learning about health from a very scientific perspective and to hear their (the 5thgraders’) perspectives about it is always fun.” — DC Medical Student Volunteer

SCHOOL

“When KiPOW comes in, it really helpls because it’s a quick, straight-to-the-point lesson. The team is very, very involved and they’re high energy. I think their energy really gets the kids excited and my students think ‘Oh great, we’re gonna have a good time’ but while having a good time, they’re also learning. ” — DC PE/Health Teacher

REACTION

“Welcome to Team KiPOW! This week we learned about MyPlate and Energy ” — Week 1 Newsletter

REACTION

“Targeting children to combat the obesity epidemic is something I’m very passionate about and I am very proud to have been a part of this project. ”

RESULTS

“Team KiPOW was easily the most transformative experience for me during medical school. It set me on a path to pursue Pediatrics as a career, and connected me with lifelong mentors in Pediatrics that I would not have otherwise had!”

“It was a great opportunity to give back to our city’s community and also to meet and learn from a population (young children) that I wouldn’t normally interact with other than during my pediatric rotation.”

“I was able to make positive changes in the lives of individuals who were impressionable and who have so much potential. This was invigorating for me and helped refresh me amidst the challenges of medical school.”

LEARNING

“Explaining healthy habits to kids makes you think about how to explain more complex concepts in easily consumable ways, which I hope translates to patient counseling in the future!.”

“I was able to tackle the task of putting together a lesson plan and see it taken into action while participating in the weekly school visits. I was able to have a better understanding on how to communicate with children and be able to explain something efficiently and effectively to them.”

IMPACT

“I believe that fostering an environment where kids want to go out and play on the field was very helpful in promoting to physical activity. ”

Team KiPOW! has flourished through the pandemic, with children of different ages, and in very different populations
